The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), established in January 2008, provides third-party project certification and professional credentials recognizing excellence in green building performance and practice. GBCI administers project certification for commercial and institutional buildings and tenant spaces under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating SystemsT addressing new construction and ongoing operations. GBCI also manages the professional credentialing programs based upon the LEED Rating Systems including the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP credentials.

  Green Building Terms and definitions of commonly sustainable green terminology
Carbon Footprint - a measure of the amount of greenhouse gases emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels. Generally measured in tons of CO2.

Energy Star - an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brand that's applicable to smaller HVAC equipment and plumbing equipment.

Green/high performance building - a building that achieves high performance over the full life cycle in the following areas: minimal energy consumption, minimal atmospheric emission, minimal discharge of harmful wastes, minimal impacts on site ecosystems, maximum quality of the indoor environment.

Green washing - making false green claims.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) - A voluntary consensus-based national standard developed by the USGBC.

Integrated Design Process (IDP) - an integrated design produces a cost-effective, high-performance building wherein all systems and components work together to produce overall functionality and environmental performance while meeting the needs of the owner.

Net Zero Energy Building - a building that, on an annual basis, draws from outside sources equal or less energy that it produces on site from renewable sources.

Sustainability - according to the ASHRAE GreenGuide, providing for the needs of the present without detracting from the ability to fulfill the needs of the future.

U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) - a national non-profit organization founded in 1993 to promote the design and construction of buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work.
